The Crummles rescue Nicholas ( Charlie Hunnam) after his escape from the Squeers school, turn him into an actor, and even find talent in the hapless Smike. Crummles ( Nathan Lane and Barry Humphries) and the brothers Cheeryble ( Timothy Spall and Gerald Horan). To balance the scales are two of the happiest comic couples Dickens ever created: the touring theatricals Vincent and Mrs. Their most pathetic target, Smike ( Jamie Bell, who played the title role in " Billy Elliot"), is seen as less of a caricature and more of a real victim. The movie gives full screen time to Wackford Squeers ( Jim Broadbent, looking curiously Churchillian) and his wife ( Juliet Stevenson)-and hints that psychosexual pathology inspired their mistreatment of students. McGrath has done some serious pruning, but the result does not seem too diluted there is room for expansive consideration of such essential characters as Nicholas' vindictive uncle Ralph ( Christopher Plummer), secretly undermined by his dipsomaniac and disloyal servant Newman Noggs ( Tom Courtenay). The movie is jolly and exciting and brimming with life, and wonderfully well-acted. The new film version by Douglas McGrath, who made " Emma" (1996), is much more reasonable than the 1980 nine-hour stage version of the Royal Shakespeare Company, which I have on laserdisk and really mean to get to one of these days.

It's an optical illusion, where the layout of the landscape makes it look like the slope is going one way, but in fact it's going the other. The explanations for the magic road phenomenon vary depending on who you're talking to - and either fairies or 'magnetic fields' are often cited - but the real answer is pretty simple. Yes, Ireland's 'magic roads' are 'a thing' - a stretch of roadway, usually well off the beaten track and hidden up a succession of byways and boreens, where if you stop the car and let the handbrake off, the vehicle will mysteriously and eerily roll uphill. If Nora knows she’s not an ideal heroine, Charlie knows he’s nobody’s hero, but as they are thrown together again and again-in a series of coincidences no editor worth their salt would allow-what they discover might just unravel the carefully crafted stories they’ve written about themselves. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute. But instead of picnics in meadows, or run-ins with a handsome country doctor or bulging-forearmed bartender, Nora keeps bumping into Charlie Lastra, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. Which is why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away-with visions of a small town transformation for Nora, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. Nora Stephens’ life is books-she’s read them all-and she is not that type of heroine. And there was also a particular breakfast scene between the two that had me in stitches courtesy of the innuendos. They are also both inexperienced teenagers when it comes to romance so it was very entertaining seeing them go through the awkwardness of a first kiss. Theirs is definitely an enemies to lovers romance and the two have a cat and mouse game going for most of the story with roles being constantly switched up. Emeric and Vanja are now officially one of my favorite couples. I loved all of them, but Ragne was my favorite, because of her incredible loyalty and insightfulness.Īnd of course I can’t end this review without talking about the romance. I also loved how well we got to know the rest of the characters in this story. The story itself felt fast paced taking place in the span of two weeks, but it never felt rushed. Vanja herself is an emotional roller coaster going from calculating to achingly vulnerable which makes her a narrator you can’t help but like despite some of her questionable choices.
